WHERE WE ARE?

A unique industrial

workshop in a historic factory from 1861, today a studio where history meets contemporary art.

The space of SW studio is located in the Fabrika 1861 in Semily. It was originally built as a locksmith's workshop and has retained its distinctive industrial character to this day.The interior is dominated by one of the oldest fully functional portal cranes, which has stood in its original position here since 1890. It is complemented by preserved stucco decoration, whose cornices and pilasters create a striking contrast with the monumental crane while at the same time harmoniously completing the entire interior. This industrial space, adorned with decorative architecture, is further underscored by the original wooden coffered ceiling.
Over time, the use of the space evolved and reflected broader historical contexts. During the Second World War, the German company Zittwerke operated here, assembling Junkers engines for Messerschmitt bombers. After the end of textile production and several years of decline, the complex gradually opened to new purposes in 2021, and its industrial past began to naturally intertwine with cultural and artistic use. Among the events held here was a performance of Karl Jenkins' Mass for Peace by the Podkrkonoší Symphony Orchestra.Today it serves as the studio of sculptor Sebastian Wojnar, where we encounter history — embodied in the original space — meeting contemporary art.
